Stall Street Journal –Entry #21

It must be the grass.

On Wednesday, May 15th there were TWO winners at Belmont who were born and raised at McMahon Thoroughbreds. In the first race, The Thinker (Tale of the Cat) was victorious running a mile in a respectable 1:34:3 while besting an allowance field on the grass. This four year old colt was bred by Empire Equines, LLC. Then, My Pal of Pals (City Zip) took the nightcap allowance event in 1:23:1 for seven furlongs, and was a maiden winner for his connections including Paul Giacopelli, MD, DeeJee Stables, and LRE Racing, LLC. Exciting news for the farm and its clients.

Another newsworthy item was ALPHABET SOUP’S Alpha Bettor winning the Grade 2 $200,000 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine for Bulldog Racing. This gallant performer increased his bankroll to $443,000 in winning the race by a neck. His trainer Daniel Vella had this to say, “He’s bred to be an older horse and he’s getting better all the time.”

Race Results:

5/14: She Be Bunny on a six and a half furlong allowance race at Parx. This CONGAREE filly races for M & N Mazoni and was bred by High Pint Thoroughbreds. Her record stands at 13 – 4 - 2 – 1 and $79K in earnings.

5/14: TEUFLESBERG’S Flash A Smile, a four year old filly owned by Lucas and Robert Cline and bred by Select Bloodstock, continues to impress as her record stands at 4 – 2 – 1 – 1.

5/15: Approaching the $100k earnings mark, Strawberry Flash, a five year old daughter of ALPHABET SOUP, is now 18 – 9 - 3 – 3. Charlie Williams is owner/breeder.

5/16: Sweet! MAYBRY’S BOY’s Sweet Moon won impressively (by ten lengths) at Finger Lakes to win his third race.  Maybry’s Farm was the breeder….My Purple Haze was the owner.

5/16: At Prairie Meadows, Rudyard Reward won his maiden by 7 ½ lengths. Adena Springs bred this son of ALPHABET SOUP and Warren Bush owns.

5/17: It was BOB AND JOHN’S Day at tracks around the country as his offspring won FOUR races! Brothers of the Time won a $39K MSW at Calder in his first outing and looks to have some talent. The two year old colt handled a group of well-bred maidens by 5 ¼ lengths for owner Gelfenstein Farm and breeder Marion Montanari. Canuck, a three year old colt, was victorious in a mile and seventy yard $24K MSW race at Prairie Meadows for owner John Richter and breeder Chyna White Investments. At Charlestown, Hong Kong Harry won his fourth race by a nose for owner Harry Kassup and breeder Connie Brown. And, Star of Light, a four year old filly broke her maiden at Woodbine by three lengths for owner In Front Enterprises and breeder Morris Floyd. All are young horses that could stay on the roll!

5/17: ALPHABET SOUP’S Learn the Lingo is now 35 – 8 – 7 – 5 with $94K in earnings. She won at Indiana Downs by 6 ¾ convincing lengths. Bred by Adena Springs, she’s owned by Neal Alread.

5/18: Souper Douper was a winner for his stallion ALPHABET SOUP and owner Lola Morales and breedr Bill Corrigan and Phil DiCosmo.

5/18: BOB AND JOHN did stay on a bit of a roll with two winners on this day. Hunter’s Hollow broke his maiden at Charlestown Racetrack for owner/breeder Sam English…and Jonrah won a $62K NY Bred race at Belmont at 1 1/16 miles on the lawn. He was bred by James Iselin, owned by Lianna Stables, Inc, and trained by Thomas Bush.

5/18: UTOPIA’S Saropia won her second straight race at Finger Lakes going wire-to-wire by four lengths. She was bred by Harald and Stephanie Berg and owned by none other than Joe and Anne McMahan…Hooray for the Good Guys!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of these winners! As for the Preakness, we did not have the winner (Oxbow), but we felt due to the sloppy nature of the track on Derby Day, there was likely an excuse for a couple of the also-rans in that field. Sloppy going can definitely affect the outcome of races…for better or worse.
