MATING RECOMMENDATIONS

Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner and millionaire Tiago is one of 53 stakes winners and seven Grade 1 winners sired by Pleasant Colony’s most successful sire son Pleasant Tap. His dam, the Stop the Music mare Set Them Free, has made quite a name for herself in the second half of this decade as she is also the dam of 2005 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Giacomo.

Pleasant Tap has sired at least eight stakes winners out of Mr. Prospector-line mares, two out of direct daughters, and one each out of mares by Fortunate Prospect, Crafty Prospector, Miswaki, Seeking the Gold, Silver Ghost and Unbridled’s Song.

The overall Pleasant Colony/Northern Dancer cross has produced at least 64 stakes winners, 13 of those by Pleasant Tap. He’s sired a Grade 1 winner out of a mare by Nureyev and the Danzig, Dixieland Band, Nijinsky II and Storm Bird/Storm Cat branches also hold high promise for Tiago.

Pleasant Tap has sired three stakes winners out of daughters and granddaughters of Danzig and it’s worth noting that Tiago has a multiple graded stakes-placed sister by the Danzig grandson Sea Hero (a son of Polish Navy). Multiple graded stakes winner Sapphire N’ Silk is among the pair of stakes winners Pleasant Tap has sired out of daughters of Dixieland Band. Mares by Dixieland Band’s good sire son Dixie Union should be considered for Tiago as well. Pleasant Tap has sired the stakes winners Boss Ego and Tappat out of granddaughters of Nijinsky II and another stakes winner out of a mare by Nijinsky’s close relative The Minstrel. There are at least 16 stakes winners bred on the larger Pleasant Colony/Nijinsky II cross, including Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Colonial Affair. 2010 was a good year for the Pleasant Colony/Storm Bird cross with the emergence of a pair of new multiple stakes winners. One is out of a granddaughter of Storm Cat and the other is by Pleasant Tap out of a daughter of Summer Squall, who is bred on the same Storm Bird/Secretariat cross as Storm Cat.

Pleasant Tap’s Grade 1 winner Premium Tap is out of a mare by the Seattle Slew grandson Thirty Six Red (a son of Slew o’ Gold). Pleasant Tap also has a stakes winner out of a mare by the Seattle Slew stallion Fast Play (a half-brother to Seeking the Gold).

Reinforcing the influence of Ribot may also prove successful for Tiago. There are at least 19 stakes winners that show Pleasant Colony on the top half of the pedigree and his grandsire Ribot on the bottom. This sample includes three Grade 1 winners.

Hail to Reason is another influence to consider bringing back to Tiago. Overall, the Pleasant Colony/Hail to Reason blend has yielded at least 32 stakes winners including four other Grade/Group 1 winners besides Tiago. Pleasant Tap, himself, has sired seven additional stakes winners out of Hail to Reason-influenced mares with Group 1 winner David Junior counted among them. In addition, there are some 34 stakes winners that show a combination of Stop the Music and Hail to Reason.
