Stall Street Journal – Entry #15

Life on the farm is humming along. We have foaled 69 foals, about half of our estimated future total. In case you are curious, 33 are colts, 36 are fillies....33 are bay, 22 are chestnut and 14 are dark bay or brown. The dams’ names start with every letter except N,  U, X, Y, and Z. We just helped deliver a record-setting FOUR foals within twenty-four hours this past weekend. But, there are about sixty more foaling to go, so we’ll see how the final stats look in a few months. In addition, we are breeding our stallions anywhere from once to ten times per day....and it should be getting busier with Mid-April and May approaching.

This weekend’s exciting 89th rendition of The Wood Memorial (Gr.1) brought back fond memories of the victories by two of our stallions: Congaree (2001) and Bob and John (2006). Important race --- and this year’s winner should be the favorite for the 2013 Run for the Roses.

Another Highcliff Stallion at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds with a noteworthy item this week is new stallion Smart Bid. His full brother “I’ll Call” won at Keeneland in his initial race for the same connections, Augustin Stable and Graham Motion. This is one that could be any kind.

Speaking of future potential, the big OBS April Sale is rapidly approaching from April 22nd – 25th. This is the biggest two year old sale, and one that consistently begets a talented, relatively low priced prospect. McMahon Thoroughbreds/Highcliff Farm Stallions are particularly well represented by the following hip #’s:

BOB AND JOHN - 290, 513, 623, 852

CATIENUS – 485, 541, 1067

COSMONAUT – 345

MR. SEKIGUCHI – 31, 288, 508, 523, 1025, 1155

STONESIDER – 80

TEUFLESBERG – 308, 434, 770

TOUCH GOLD – 429, 1149

UTOPIA – 1, 15, 173, 177, 250, 672, 758, 832, 977, 1088

We are receiving particularly positive feedback on a bay Utopia colt out of the dam Dancing On Broadway. Brent Fernung of Journeyman Stud says he is a very nice mover and physical. Tony Everard is high on an Afleet Alex – That’s Good colt (#1073) that we bred. He is ahead of most and looks the part. A Catienus- Tekawitha February chestnut colt (#1067) is also getting rave reviews from consignor Niall Brennan.

On the racetrack, Catienus had another winner on Sunday 4/7 at Keeneland when his four year old colt Southern Joy won a 1 1/8 mile event widening in the stretch to win by 4 1/2 lengths. Ken and Sarah Ramsey are the owner/breeder and Michael Maker is the trainer. Congratulations!
