Stall Street Journal – Entry #26

Lo and behold, we are nearing the midpoint of the year. Hard to believe. Seems like we were just entering foaling season, signing our first breeding contracts, wondering if our hay stockpile was going to last and thinking how the Saratoga racing season was forever in the distant future. Our one hundred and twenty-fourth and final foal was born a couple weeks ago, the stallions were busy all season, the first cut of hay is in the barn, and racing is but one month away here at The Spa. Time sure flies when you’re having fun.

The rhythm of life here on the farm is reassuring and constant. Nothing ever gets stale around here, because once we get a little bit weary of foaling, mud, heat, bugs, breeding, sales prepping, mowing, shoveling, critters, vanning, frozen fingers, selling seasons, traveling to sales, even going to the races --- a new, fresh phase begins. The variety allows for excitement and rejuvenation --- at first things may seem daunting, but then we get back in the swing and it flows easily --- like we’d never been away from it.

We welcome change. It’s what keeps this lifestyle so interesting. Weather, personalities, challenges, marketplace conditions, clients, projects, winners and losers….not too many things seem to remain the same.

Sale prepping, socializing, weaning of foals, shopping for new bloodlines, farm upgrades and more….these are here now, as we put foaling and breeding on the back-burner for now.

Your visits to McMahon Thoroughbreds of Saratoga are welcome….as it remains a beautiful destination and time of the year to be a fan of horses and the sport. We hope it’s a relaxing and fun summer for you and yours…with a bit of excitement in store if you do get to the races from time to time. Good Luck!
