Stall Street Journal – Entry # 28

We thought we would take you through a “Dog Day Afternoon” on the farm. In other words, what sorts of things happen during a “typical” summer day here at McMahon Thoroughbreds of Saratoga.

  • -Prep the Saratoga sale yearlings…long walks, euro-ciser workouts, first baths, lots of brushing/grooming/handling
  • -Vaccinate the foals
  • -Final vet check of some late covered mares…our fingers are crossed
  • -Host a large caravan visiting from western New York
  • -Prepare advertising/marketing for upcoming editions of trade publications
  • -Send out June billing
  • -Wolf down lunch
  • -Check whether we have enough fans for all the stalls
  • -Check weather --- to see if we’ll finally be able to cut our hay
  • -Meet with builder regarding barn renovations
  • -Unload final group of mares returning from Kentucky
  • -Evaluate stock for potential entries in Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga’s October Mixed Sale
  • -Visit track to check on a couple of our racehorses in training
  • -Haul manure
  • -Haul feed
  • -Haul water
  • -Remember to drink enough water
  • -Answer phone calls from clients, sales companies, newspapers, etc.
  • -Lead mares/foals and stallions in and out
  • -… an assortment of other details

 Is there any wonder why we sleep well at night?

 Winner’s Circle

 While all of our stallions had a bunch of winners over the last week, we are most excited/proud about a three year old filly that we bred and raised here named EFFIE TRINKET. She is by FREUD (out of Maya’s Note), owned by Patsy Simons, and trained by Rick Violette. She won the open $100K Diamondrella Stakes at Belmont going seven furlongs on the grass in 1:21:1. Very exciting, indeed!

On a foggy Saturday at the Big A, with slop underfoot, Shea D Boy’s Stable 10-1 Bank on Shea, a bay juvenile colt by Central Banker, translated a final surge at the rail into a big payday, just getting his nose in front of favorite Dream Bigger to win the $500,000 Great White Way division of the New York Stallion Stakes (NYSS) series.
